From February to July of 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. These encounters led Bernadette to a spring that is now famous for its healing properties. Pilgrims can visit the Grotto, where the apparitions took place, and collect water from the spring. In addition to the grotto, pilgrimages to the site often include Bernadette’s family home, which offers insight into her humble beginnings, the Chapel of the Eucharistic Miracles for contemplation on the significance of the Eucharist, and the stunning Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where visitors can partake in Mass or quiet prayer.

Fatima, Portugal

Traveling to Fatima, Portugal, you will find another pivotal location in Catholic history. In 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto—at the Cova da Iria. During these visits, she conveyed powerful messages of prayer, penance, and the importance of the rosary. Pilgrims can spend time at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, a serene place for worship and reflection and The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, which houses the remains of the visionaries offering a profound connection to the events. The Chapel of the Apparitions, where Mary first appeared, serves as the heart of the site and is a place for deep contemplation.

Guadalupe, Mexico

In Guadalupe, Mexico, the Virgin Mary's appeared to Juan Diego in 1531 on the hill of Tepeyac, near modern-day Mexico City. Identifying herself as the Mother of God, she requested that a church be built on the hill. In a miraculous sign, she transformed a bundle of roses into her image on Juan Diego’s tilma, symbolizing the unity between indigenous cultures and Catholicism. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe stands as the main pilgrimage site, where visitors can view the original tilma from the apparition. The Chapel of Apparitions, where the miraculous event occurred, invites prayer and reflection, while the Museum of Our Lady of Guadalupe provides a rich historical context for this beloved figure.

Knock, Ireland

Knock, Ireland, has another important pilgrimage destination. On August 21, 1879, the Virgin Mary, along with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist, appeared to 15 villagers. Each witness reported seeing the figures illuminated by a mysterious light. This site has become significant in the Catholic tradition, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. At the Basilica, pilgrims find a beautiful space for worship, while the Apparition Chapel allows visitors to reflect.

Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina 

In Medjugorje, from June 1981 onward, six children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary, who continues to be a source of inspiration for millions of pilgrims. These encounters led to the establishment of a vibrant spiritual community focused on prayer, reconciliation, and conversion. Visitors often trek up Apparition Hill, where the first visions occurred, and participate in the daily rosary and Mass at St. James Church, which serves as a central hub for worship. The region is also known for its peace and scenic landscapes, drawing pilgrims to the nearby Cross Mountain, where a towering cross stands as a symbol of faith and hope. Many come seeking spiritual renewal, guided by the messages of peace and love attributed to the Virgin Mary.
